If we were to make a prediction about what all the “cool kids” (marketers, products and booths) will be wearing at the NBAA Conference this year, it will be that everyone will be using QR Codes! We expect to see them in all shapes and sizes and on all types of marketing materials.
According to NeilsonWire, one in two Americans carry a smartphone (iPhone, Blackberry, Android or a competing product.) The percentage may be higher for aviation trade show attendees, since these are often mobile, “gadget addicted” executives. These smartphones have a feature that allows them to scan a barcode or QR code to access to information, such as a web address, video or telephone number. Visitors just zap the code and get instant access to the information you’re providing, rather than having to type in a URL or phone number – which can be a challenge on those tiny keypads!
QR codes can be put to good use by creative marketers to get the right information to the customer in a fun, convenient format. QR codes can include:
- A phone number, which the phone can then dial when the visitor just pushes one button. (Great for 1-800 recorded messages or product information.)
- A video—which could include an interview, a presentation, or a product demonstration – we’ve seen these used on innovative product packaging so that a shopper can scan the QR code when considering a purchase.
- The website address of a landing page where the visitor can enter his information and receive something – a coupon or free download, for example.
The reason we are predicting their widespread use for the NBAA Annual Convention is because they are so handy for bringing “offline” traffic to a website or other online material. They’re great for product demonstrations and lead generation. We use them in direct mail, trade show collateral, product packaging, and even T-shirts!
QR codes really don’t have a place on web pages or other online material, because their real purpose is to make it convenient for shoppers or potential clients to access online content at just the right time to help them make a purchase decision.
We’re considering QR codes for all new materials for our clients.
Whether we’re working on trade show materials, postcards, direct mail packages, or even promotional items like USB memory sticks, QR codes are a great way to pack a lot of powerful information into a very small space.
